Every Amazon seller with meaningful volume eventually faces the unfulfillable inventory question.
A customer returns a product, Amazon opens the package, it's no longer sellable as new, and now it's sitting in their warehouse costing you storage fees. What do you do?
Amazon gives you several options, and the wrong choice can cost you more than the product is worth...
The 3 automated recovery options are refurbishment, grade and resell, and liquidation.
Refurbishment is only worth considering for electronics and items that can genuinely be repackaged and resold as certified refurbished. For most products, this isn't viable.
Grade and resell is one I recommend against in almost every case. Amazon assigns a condition grade to your returned item and lists it as used on your listing. This creates multiple condition offers on your product page - used like new, used acceptable - that confuse buyers, pushes prices down, and undermine your brand presentation. The financial return is usually minimal and the downside is more.
Liquidation is a last resort. You'll get cents on the dollar. Worse, it puts products into the hands of resellers who may list them back on your listing at prices that create a competitive and brand integrity problem. Avoid unless you're genuinely trying to recover any amount from completely dead inventory.
Between the two primary options - return to seller versus dispose - return to seller wins almost every time. When Amazon "disposes" of a product, the process isn't always a literal disposal. It often feeds back into liquidation anyway. You lose visibility and control over where the unit ends up.
When you receive the unit back, your options open up. You can resell through another channel, donate it, or dispose of it on your own terms. You keep control.
The only exception is truly dead inventory where the cost of shipping back and handling exceeds any value you could recover. For most products at any reasonable price point, return to seller is the right call.
Keep building,
